Begun in 2015, THE BLACK KITE PROJECT is an ongoing project where kites are created as artworks that are built and flown in remembrance of extinct species. Each kite is created as a memorial to a species that has become extinct. The species and its last known sighting are printed on the kite and on a tag on the kite’s tail.
The kites are made of trash bags, wood, string, tape and wire. Each kite is 40 inches across and 54 inches long not including the tail. The tail length and the bow of the kite varies. The kites are built to be flown and a few have already been aloft. The Project looks to create events where many of the kites are flown at one time. In some ways, when a kite is flying in the breeze, it is as if the species has been reanimated as the kite pulls back on the string.
